Pricing breakdown for freelancers

The most flexible approach is to mix pricing models on the same invoice:

  • Hourly — show hours × rate (e.g. "16 × £75")
  • Daily — show days × day rate
  • Fixed — single agreed price for a deliverable

Setting your rate? Use the Freelance Rate Calculator to work out a sustainable hourly or day rate based on your income target.

Examples by freelance industry

Designers

Mix hourly billing for discovery/iteration with fixed-fee deliverables (logo, cards, web pages). Make sure round numbers reflect agreed scope.

Writers

Typically per-word, per-piece or per-day. Show the word count or piece count so clients understand the invoice without asking.

Consultants

Usually billed by day or by retainer. Include the project or engagement name in the description so the invoice slots into the client's PO system.

Frequently asked questions

  • What should a freelancer invoice include in the UK?

Your name (and trading name if used), your address, the client's name and address, a unique sequential invoice number, the date, a clear description of services, the total amount due, and payment terms with bank details.
  • How should freelancers price their work on an invoice?

Either by hour, by day, or by fixed project fee. Show the rate × units (e.g. '8 hours × £60') so the client can see how the total was calculated. Use the Freelance Rate Calculator if you're still setting your rate.
  • Do freelancers need to charge VAT?

Only if VAT registered. Most freelancers aren't — you only need to register once you cross the VAT threshold, or if you choose to voluntarily.
  • How long should freelancers give clients to pay?

14 days is the freelancer standard, 30 days is common for larger clients. Always state the due date clearly.
