Use case

Freelance Developer Day Rate UK

A realistic example of how a senior UK freelance developer prices their day rate — with fewer billable days than most calculators assume.

The scenario

Marcus is a senior full-stack developer based in Manchester, working through his own limited company. His targets:

  • £85,000 income target (before personal tax)
  • £9,000 business expenses (accountant, cloud hosting, software, equipment)
  • 140 billable days a year — lower than designers, more meetings and technical debt
  • A working day of 6 productive hours (engineering deep work is shorter than design days)

The formula

Day rate = (Income target + Expenses) ÷ Billable days

Hourly rate = Day rate ÷ Productive hours

The calculation

Total revenue needed = £85,000 + £9,000 = £94,000

Day rate = £94,000 ÷ 140 = £671/day

Hourly rate = £671 ÷ 6 = £112/hour

Marcus needs a floor of around £671/day or £112/hour. In practice he quotes £750–£850/day to cover quiet weeks and contingency.

Why developer billable time is lower

Developers consistently overestimate billable time. Typical lost time:

  • Discovery calls and scoping sessions
  • Code reviews and PR back-and-forth
  • Infrastructure setup and deployment debugging
  • Documentation and handover
  • Updating dependencies and security patches

If you plan 200 billable days and only hit 140, your rate is 30% too low. Plan conservatively.

Frequently asked questions

  • What's a typical UK freelance developer day rate?

Mid-level UK developers typically charge £400–£600/day. Senior and specialist developers (cloud, security, ML) often charge £700–£1,200/day. Contract roles via recruiters cluster around £450–£650/day depending on stack and IR35 status.
  • Why are developer billable days lower than designers?

Developers spend significant time on technical debt, deployment, infrastructure setup, and meetings that can't always be billed cleanly. Realistic billable days for freelance devs are often 130–145, lower than the design average.
  • Should developers quote day rate or fixed price?

Day rate suits most freelance development work — scope changes too often for safe fixed quotes. Fixed prices only work for tightly defined features. For longer engagements, weekly or monthly retainers are common.
  • Do developers usually charge VAT?

Often, yes. Many UK contract developers operate through a limited company and register for VAT (sometimes on the Flat Rate Scheme). Agencies and recruiters expect VAT on their invoices once you're registered.
